Handball Betting on 8XBET: Regulation Time, Totals and the Champions League

Handball is played over 60 minutes and produces 50 to 70 goals, so the totals and handicap markets need different instincts from football.

Handball betting is mostly about two things: whether a market includes overtime, and how many goals are scored. A senior match is 60 minutes long, in two 30-minute halves. Drawn league games stay drawn, so a 3-way market carries a real draw risk. Top men’s matches often produce 55 goals or more. Football instincts are not much help with either point, so the details are below.

What 60 minutes of regulation means

IHF rules set two 30-minute halves with a break in between. 8XBET, like most bookmakers, settles handball markets on the score after 60 minutes, which they call regulation or normal time. Overtime is played only when a match needs a winner, such as a cup knockout or a final. In that case it consists of two five-minute periods, followed by a second overtime and then a 7-metre throw shootout if the scores are still level.

For betting, the result is:

  • League matches: a draw after 60 minutes is final, and 3-way bets settle on it.
  • Knockout ties: “to qualify” or “to lift the trophy” markets include overtime and shootouts, while the standard 1X2 market still settles at 60 minutes.

3-way vs 2-way markets

1X2 (3-way)

Home, draw or away, settled at 60 minutes. Draws are less common than in football, but in an evenly matched EHF Champions League game the draw can be priced around 9.00. Say a match finishes 29–29 after 60 minutes. A ₦5,000 bet on the home side at 2.10 loses, while a ₦1,000 bet on the draw at 9.00 returns ₦9,000.

2-way markets

2-way markets remove the draw in one of two ways. A moneyline including overtime is common in knockout games. A draw no bet market returns your stake if the match is drawn at 60 minutes. The 2-way price is lower than the 1X2 price for the same team, and the difference is what you pay to cover the draw.

Goal totals and why they are so high

Teams in handball attack about once every 30 seconds, and a high proportion of attacks end in a shot. Men’s elite club matches commonly finish with totals in the high 50s or low 60s. Women’s matches and lower leagues are often a little lower. Totals lines are set at half-goal values such as 57.5, so there is no push.

Look at the 2026 EHF Champions League men’s final in Cologne on 14 June: Barça beat Füchse Berlin 37–34, after leading 20–16 at half-time.

MarketLineCalculationResult
Full-time totalOver 62.537 + 34 = 71Over wins
First-half totalOver 30.520 + 16 = 36Over wins
Second-half totalUnder 33.517 + 18 = 35Under loses
Barça −2.5 handicap1.85Won by 3Wins: ₦4,000 returns ₦7,400

Barça scored 17 goals in the second half (37 − 20), and Füchse Berlin scored 18 (34 − 16), so Füchse won the second half even though they lost the match. Half-by-half markets often settle against the full-time result.

What moves a handball line

  • Two-minute suspensions: a team playing a man short concedes goals faster. Live prices react within seconds, and several suspensions in a short spell can swing both handicap and totals markets.
  • Goalkeepers: a goalkeeper saving 40% of shots instead of 25% can take five or more goals off the total. Starting goalkeeper news matters more than most bettors realise.
  • Empty-net seven-on-six attacks: a trailing team may replace the goalkeeper with an extra court player. This adds goals at both ends late in the game, which hurts under bets.
  • Fixture congestion: players in the top leagues often play twice a week between their domestic league and Europe, and rotation can make favourites less reliable.

The EHF Champions League

The EHF Champions League is the top club competition in European handball. The men’s season runs from September to June, through a group phase and knockout rounds, and ends with the Final4 weekend in Cologne’s Lanxess Arena (EHF Final4 event information). The women’s Final4 is held in Budapest. Strong domestic leagues, especially Germany’s Bundesliga, Denmark, France, Spain, Hungary and Poland, provide much of the betting calendar between European rounds. Men’s international tournaments fill January: the IHF World Championship in odd years and the EHF EURO in even years.

For bettors in Nigeria, the timing is convenient. Champions League midweek matches usually start in the evening in Central Europe. From late October to late March, Central European Time is the same as WAT, so an 18:45 throw-off in Germany is 18:45 in Lagos. During European summer time it is an hour earlier in Nigeria. 8XBET lists the main European leagues alongside the Champions League in season.

Handicaps in handball

Because so many goals are scored, handicaps on 8XBET commonly run from −2.5 to −8.5 or more, and alternative lines let you choose your own balance of risk and price. Lines on whole numbers can push. With a −5 handicap, a five-goal win returns your stake. The Asian handicap guide explains whole and quarter lines, and the European handicap guide covers the 3-way version, where a draw on the handicap is its own outcome.

A note on live betting

Handball is good for live betting because goals come quickly and a single goal moves the price only slightly. The weakness is the delay in data feeds. A pre-match price based on your own reading of team news is often better value than chasing in-play odds.

Frequently asked questions

Does overtime count in handball betting?

For the standard 1X2 market, no. Handball markets are settled on the score after 60 minutes of regulation time, so a match level at full time is a draw for betting even if overtime follows. “To qualify” and “to lift the trophy” markets in knockout ties do include overtime and any 7-metre throw shootout.

Can a handball match end in a draw?

Yes. A league match that is level after 60 minutes stays drawn, and 3-way bets settle on that draw. Draws are less frequent than in football, but in closely matched games the draw can be priced around 9.00, so a draw no bet market is worth considering when you only want to back a winner.

How many goals are scored in a typical handball match?

Elite men’s club matches commonly total in the high 50s or low 60s, because teams attack roughly every 30 seconds. Women’s matches and lower leagues often score a little less. Bookmakers set totals at half-goal values such as 57.5, so a totals bet cannot push.

What happens if a handball handicap lands exactly on the margin?

On a whole-number line, an exact margin is a push and your stake is returned, so a −5 bet on a team that wins by five goals pays back the stake only. Half-goal lines such as −4.5 always produce a winner or a loser. In a 3-way European handicap, the handicap draw is a separate outcome you can back.

When is the EHF Champions League played?

The men’s EHF Champions League season runs from September to June, from a group phase through knockout rounds to the Final4 weekend at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. In the 2025/26 final on 14 June 2026, Barça beat Füchse Berlin 37–34. Midweek matches usually throw off in the European evening, which matches WAT from late October to late March.
