Baseball betting rests on three markets: the moneyline (who wins), the run line (a fixed 1.5-run handicap) and totals (combined runs). What sets it apart from other sports is how much one player matters. The starting pitcher shapes the price more than anyone else, so bookmakers have special rules for when that pitcher changes. This guide covers the markets with full examples, then the pitcher and extra-innings rules, then when MLB games fall in Nigerian time.
The moneyline
Baseball games cannot end in a draw, so the moneyline has two sides. Prices are tighter than in many sports because even weak teams win about four games in ten, and an MLB favourite is rarely shorter than 1.50. Say 8XBET prices a game at 1.62 for the favourite and 2.40 for the underdog. A ₦5,000 bet on the underdog returns ₦12,000 if it wins.
The run line
The run line is baseball’s standard handicap, set almost always at 1.5 runs. The favourite is at −1.5 and must win by two runs or more. The underdog is at +1.5 and wins the bet if it loses by one run or wins outright. Because many games are decided by a single run, the prices flip: the favourite might be 2.10 on the run line, while the underdog falls to 1.75.
Worked example: the game finishes 4–3 to the favourite.
- Moneyline on the favourite: wins.
- Favourite −1.5: loses, because a one-run win does not cover 1.5.
- Underdog +1.5: wins. A ₦4,000 bet at 1.75 returns ₦7,000.
This is the most common way baseball bettors misread a result. Choosing the right winner does not settle a run-line bet in your favour.
Totals
Totals lines in MLB usually sit between 7 and 10 runs. A strong starting pitcher on each side pulls the line down, while a hitter-friendly ballpark or a weak bullpen pushes it up. In the 4–3 game above, 7 runs were scored, so an under 8.5 bet wins. Team totals work the same way for one side only. First five innings (F5) markets settle after five innings, so you are betting on the starting pitchers and the bullpens are taken out of the bet.
The listed-pitcher rule
When you bet, the bet slip shows the expected starting pitchers. Bookmakers usually let you choose between three settlement options:
| Option | If a listed starter does not start |
|---|---|
| Both pitchers listed | Bet is void and the stake is returned |
| One pitcher listed | Void only if your named pitcher changes |
| Action | Bet stands at the price you took, or is repriced, depending on the bookmaker |
A pitcher is normally counted as the starter once he throws the first pitch for his team. If he is injured in the first inning, the bet still stands. A late scratch is different: when a top starter is ruled out an hour before the game, the price you took no longer reflects the matchup. On a moneyline or run-line bet, keeping the listed-pitcher protection is usually the sensible choice. 8XBET’s baseball rules state which option a bet defaults to, so read them before staking large amounts.
Extra innings
A tied game goes to extra innings, and all full-game markets include them: moneyline, run line and totals. In MLB regular-season games, each extra inning begins with an automatic runner on second base, which is designed to end games quickly (see MLB’s automatic runner glossary entry). Postseason games do not use the automatic runner.
Extra innings matter most for totals. Say a game is 3–3 after nine innings, which is 6 runs and under an 8.5 line. The away team scores the automatic runner plus one more in the tenth, and the home side scores one: 5–4, 9 runs, so the over wins. Extra innings also explain the run line. A home team that wins in extra innings usually wins by exactly one run, because the game ends as soon as they take the lead, so a home −1.5 bet rarely covers in extras.
Rain and shortened games
MLB counts a game as official after five innings, or four and a half if the home team is ahead. Bookmakers handle shortened games differently. A common approach is that moneyline bets stand on an official result, while run-line and totals bets need nine innings, or eight and a half if the home team leads, to stand. Games that are suspended and resumed on a later date can also be settled differently. The rule depends on the bookmaker, so it is worth knowing before a game with heavy rain in the forecast.
MLB timing in WAT
The MLB regular season runs from late March to late September, with the postseason in October. During this period, the US East Coast is on daylight time (UTC−4), five hours behind WAT:
- A standard 7:05 pm ET evening game starts at 00:05 WAT.
- A 1:05 pm ET afternoon game starts at 18:05 WAT, which is easy to follow live after work in Nigeria.
- A 7:10 pm Pacific game on the West Coast starts at 03:10 WAT.
Teams play 162 games, almost every day, so 8XBET usually lists more than a dozen MLB games each evening in season. For overnight games, decide before you sleep whether you want listed-pitcher protection, because late lineup changes happen while Nigeria is asleep. If you follow the evening game live, our in-play betting page covers how prices react to pitching changes.
Beyond MLB
Japan’s NPB and South Korea’s KBO run their seasons from roughly late March or early April to October. Their games start in the morning in Nigeria: a 6:00 pm game in Tokyo starts at 10:00 am WAT, and a 6:30 pm game in Seoul at 10:30 am WAT. Both use the same core markets, though their extra-innings rules differ from MLB’s and some regular-season games can end as a tie. Bet on NPB or KBO only after reading how a tie is settled.

Frequently asked questions
Can a baseball game end in a draw?
MLB games cannot end in a draw, because a tied game goes to extra innings until there is a winner, so the moneyline has just two sides. Some regular-season games in Japan’s NPB and South Korea’s KBO can finish as a tie, so read how a tie is settled before betting on those leagues.
What does −1.5 mean on a baseball run line?
It means the team must win by at least two runs for your bet to win. A one-run victory, which is common in baseball, loses a −1.5 bet even though the team won the game. The +1.5 side wins if that team wins outright or loses by exactly one run.
Do extra innings count for baseball bets?
Yes. Full-game markets such as the moneyline, run line and totals all include extra innings, so runs scored in the 10th inning or later count towards the over/under. First five innings (F5) bets are the exception, as they settle after five innings no matter what happens later.
What happens to my baseball bet if the starting pitcher changes?
It depends on the option attached to your bet. With both pitchers listed, a change to either starter voids the bet and returns your stake; with one pitcher listed, only a change to that pitcher voids it; and with “action” the bet stands at the price taken or is repriced. Once a listed pitcher throws the first pitch, he counts as the starter even if he leaves injured soon after.
What time do MLB games start in Nigeria?
During the MLB season, the US East Coast is five hours behind WAT, so a 7:05 pm ET evening game starts at 00:05 WAT and a 1:05 pm ET afternoon game at 18:05 WAT. West Coast evening games start around 03:10 WAT. If you prefer betting in-play while awake, the afternoon games and our live betting page are the place to start.
