Poker in an online casino comes in two very different forms. In player-versus-player poker you compete against other people and the casino takes a fee. In casino poker you play against the dealer, with a fixed paytable and a built-in house edge, just like blackjack or roulette. Most poker tiles in a casino lobby, including the poker-style tables at 8XBET, are the second kind.
Player-versus-player poker and casino poker
| Player-versus-player | Casino poker | |
|---|---|---|
| Opponent | Other players | The dealer |
| How the house earns | Rake, a small cut of each pot or a tournament fee | House edge built into the payouts |
| Can skill beat it long term | Yes, against weaker players | No; skill only reduces the edge |
| Typical games | Texas Hold’em, Omaha | Casino Hold’em, Three Card Poker, Caribbean Stud, video poker |
| Pace | Slow; you wait for others | Fast; one hand at a time |
Player-versus-player poker needs a dedicated poker room with its own software and player pool. If a lobby only shows dealer tables, it is casino poker.
Casino Hold’em
Casino Hold’em borrows Texas Hold’em’s structure. You place an ante, you and the dealer each get two cards, and three community cards are dealt. You then fold, losing the ante, or call with a bet of twice the ante. Two more community cards follow and the dealer reveals.
The dealer needs a pair of fours or better to qualify. If the dealer does not qualify, the ante is paid from the bonus table and the call pushes. If the dealer qualifies and you win, the ante pays from the table and the call pays 1 to 1.
| Ante payout (common table) | Pays |
|---|---|
| Royal flush | 100 to 1 |
| Straight flush | 20 to 1 |
| Four of a kind | 10 to 1 |
| Full house | 3 to 1 |
| Flush | 2 to 1 |
| Straight or lower | 1 to 1 |
With that paytable and correct strategy, the house edge is 2.16% of the ante, according to Wizard of Odds’ Casino Hold’em analysis. Correct strategy means calling about 82% of the time and folding only the weakest 18% of starting hands. Players who fold too often hand back much of that advantage. The optional AA+ side bet carries a higher edge, between about 3% and 6.4% depending on the version.
Three Card Poker
Three Card Poker is quick: three cards each, no draws. It is really two games on one table.
Ante and Play
You place an ante, look at your cards, and either fold or place a Play bet equal to the ante. The dealer qualifies with queen-high or better. If the dealer does not qualify, the ante pays even money and the Play bet pushes. The optimal rule is simple: play any hand of queen-6-4 or better, fold anything worse.
An ante bonus pays on strong hands regardless of the dealer. On the most common table (straight flush 5 to 1, three of a kind 4 to 1, straight 1 to 1), the house edge is 3.37% of the ante.
Pair Plus
Pair Plus is a separate bet on your own three cards making a pair or better. The house edge depends entirely on the paytable, from 2.32% on the best common table to over 7% on stingy ones, according to Wizard of Odds’ Three Card Poker tables. Read the payout for a flush and a straight in the table’s help screen before you bet it.
Caribbean Stud
Caribbean Stud gives you five cards against the dealer’s five. After seeing your hand you fold or raise exactly twice the ante. The dealer qualifies with ace-king or better.
| Raise payout (standard table) | Pays |
|---|---|
| Royal flush | 100 to 1 |
| Straight flush | 50 to 1 |
| Four of a kind | 20 to 1 |
| Full house | 7 to 1 |
| Flush | 5 to 1 |
| Straight | 4 to 1 |
| Three of a kind | 3 to 1 |
| Two pair | 2 to 1 |
| Pair or lower | 1 to 1 |
The house edge is about 5.22% of the ante with optimal play, per Wizard of Odds, making it the most expensive of the main casino poker games. Its progressive side bet averages a house edge above 26%, which is why it rarely makes sense outside a very large jackpot.
Video poker
Video poker is a single-player RNG game: you get five cards, hold any of them, draw replacements, and are paid by a fixed paytable. Jacks or Better is the standard version, and the paytable is named after the full house and flush payouts.
| Jacks or Better version | Return with perfect strategy | House edge |
|---|---|---|
| 9/6 (full house 9, flush 6) | 99.54% | 0.46% |
| 8/5 | 97.30% | 2.70% |
| 7/5 | 96.15% | 3.85% |
| 6/5 | 95.00% | 5.00% |
Figures are from Wizard of Odds’ Jacks or Better tables. A full-pay 9/6 machine is one of the cheapest games in any casino, but only with near-perfect holds, and the royal flush payout usually requires the maximum coin bet.
What the edges mean in naira
House edge is quoted on the ante, while you often put more on the table. On a ₦1,000 ante:
- Casino Hold’em costs about ₦21.60 per hand on average, even though a call puts ₦3,000 at risk.
- Three Card Poker Ante and Play costs about ₦33.70 per hand.
- Caribbean Stud costs about ₦52.20 per hand, with up to ₦3,000 on the table.
Over 500 hands of ₦100 video poker, ₦50,000 passes through the machine. On 9/6 Jacks or Better the expected loss is about ₦230; on an 8/5 machine it is about ₦1,350 for the same play. The paytable matters more than any tactic.
Choosing between them
For the lowest edge, choose full-pay video poker if you will learn the strategy, or Casino Hold’em if you prefer a dealer. For speed and simplicity, Three Card Poker. Caribbean Stud suits players who like five-card hands and accept a higher cost. For comparison with other card tables, see the card games overview, and for hand-by-hand blackjack decisions, the blackjack guide.
FAQ
Is casino poker a game of skill
Partly. Correct decisions minimise the house edge, but no strategy turns it into a player advantage.
Why does the dealer need to qualify
Qualification protects the house: when the dealer misses, your raise or call only pushes, which is a key part of how the edge is built.
Treat side bets and progressives as the expensive extras they are, and keep sessions within your limits; the responsible gambling page has tools if needed.
