Table tennis is one of the busiest betting sports, with matches running from early morning until late at night. A match is played over individual games, each first to 11 points with a two-point lead. Most matches are best of five or best of seven games. The constant flow of fixtures makes it popular for quick bets, but a large share of those fixtures come from small leagues where match-fixing has been a documented problem.
Games, not sets
In table tennis, the units of a match are called games, not sets. You will sometimes see “set betting” on a bet slip because the market template was borrowed from tennis, but it means the same thing: the score in games. ITTF rules define the format:
- A game is won by the first player to 11 points. At 10–10, play continues until one player is two points ahead, so 12–10, 13–11 and so on.
- Service alternates every two points, then every point once the score reaches 10–10.
- Best of five games means first to three game wins. Best of seven means first to four.
Major tournaments and later rounds tend to use best of seven, while most of the high-volume leagues use best of five. Check the format before you bet on totals, because two extra games can double the number of points played.
Main markets
Match winner
This is a two-way bet with no draw, and on 8XBET it is often the only market offered for the smallest leagues. Prices in low-tier leagues are often close because the players meet each other repeatedly and know each other’s game.
Correct score in games
A best-of-five match has six possible scores: 3–0, 3–1 or 3–2 to either player. A best-of-seven match has eight.
Game handicap
A −1.5 games handicap on the favourite wins if they take the match 3–0 or 3–1 in a best-of-five, and loses if they win 3–2. The +1.5 side wins if the underdog loses no worse than 2–3.
Point totals
Point totals can be set for the whole match or for a single game. The lowest possible game total is 11 (an 11–0 game). Any game that reaches 10–10 totals at least 22 points, and a 13–11 game totals 24.
A full worked example
A best-of-five match finishes 3–1 to the favourite, with game scores of 11–9, 9–11, 12–10, 11–7.
| Market | Line | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Match winner (favourite) | 1.55 | Won 3–1 | ₦4,000 returns ₦6,200 |
| Handicap −1.5 games | 1.95 | 3–1 is a two-game margin | Wins |
| Total match points | Over 74.5 | 20 + 20 + 22 + 18 = 80 | Over wins |
| Game 3 total points | Over 19.5 | 12 + 10 = 22 | Over wins |
Points add up quickly in a match with several close games. One deuce game can move a total by four or five points, so fine margins decide many totals bets.
Why fixtures never stop
Elite events such as WTT Champions, the World Championships and the Olympics make up only a small part of the betting calendar. Most fixtures come from organised leagues in Central and Eastern Europe, where a small group of players plays many short matches a day on several tables. One player can appear six or more times in a single day. On 8XBET and most other sportsbooks, the result is a list of fixtures that refreshes every few minutes, from early morning until late at night WAT.
That pace changes how you should approach it. Each match takes only 15 to 25 minutes. Your next stake can be on the slip before you have thought about the last one, and there is little real form or news for most of these players. If you play these leagues, set a stake limit for the session and a time to stop. The bankroll management guide shows how to size stakes when bets are this frequent.
Integrity concerns in low-tier leagues
This risk is real, not theoretical. In July 2020, New Jersey regulators suspended betting on all table tennis events in Ukraine, including the Setka Cup, after an integrity monitor warned that matches may be fixed (CBS Sports report). In March 2025, the UK Gambling Commission reported that four Table Tennis England members had been suspended after a disciplinary panel found breaches of anti-corruption rules. The case began with unusual betting on 2020 matches in Ukraine (Gambling Commission statement).
The structure of these leagues explains the risk. Players earn little, there is little media coverage, and individual sports are easy to influence because only one person needs to be involved. Practical warning signs:
- Prices that move sharply just before the start, with no news to explain it.
- Lopsided results between players who usually play close matches.
- Telegram or WhatsApp groups selling “fixed table tennis” tips. Anyone who really knew a result in advance would not be selling it to strangers.
If you bet on table tennis, keep most of your stakes on ITTF and WTT events, which have proper officiating, broadcast coverage and integrity programmes.
Nigeria’s link to the sport
Table tennis has a strong following in Nigeria. Quadri Aruna reached the quarter-finals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and in June 2022 he became the first African player ranked in the world top 10. When Nigerian players appear in WTT or ITTF draws, 8XBET and other sportsbooks usually list their matches with full markets. They are also some of the few table tennis fixtures where local knowledge of the players can help you.
Live betting
In-play prices move after nearly every point, and with streams and data feeds a few seconds behind the table, the bookmaker often has the more up-to-date information. Live table tennis markets on 8XBET can be suspended between rallies. Read our live betting guide on latency before you bet in play. For combining several matches, see the accumulator explainer. Just be aware that each extra low-tier leg adds to the integrity risk.

Frequently asked questions
How many points are in a table tennis game?
A game goes to 11 points and must be won by two, so from 10-10 it continues to 12-10, 13-11 and so on. Matches are usually best of five games (first to three) or best of seven (first to four).
Is “set betting” in table tennis the same as game betting?
Yes. Table tennis matches are made of games, not sets, and the “set betting” label is borrowed from tennis market templates. It refers to the score in games, such as 3-1.
Why are there so many table tennis matches to bet on?
Most fixtures come from organised leagues in Central and Eastern Europe, where a small pool of players plays many short matches a day on several tables. One player can appear six or more times in a single day, so the fixture list refreshes every few minutes.
Are low-tier table tennis leagues fixed?
Not every match, but match-fixing has been documented. New Jersey suspended betting on Ukrainian table tennis, including the Setka Cup, in 2020, and four Table Tennis England members were suspended in 2025 after a case linked to unusual betting on matches in Ukraine. Keeping most stakes on ITTF and WTT events reduces that risk.
