Indoor volleyball is decided in sets. The first team to win three sets wins the match, and every rally scores a point. A match can only end 3–0, 3–1 or 3–2, with no draw, so most volleyball betting comes down to how many sets the match goes and how many points are played. The examples below include the 2025 Women’s World Championship final, so you can check every number.
Rally scoring and why it matters for betting
Under FIVB rules, a point is scored on every rally, regardless of which team served. Sets one to four are played to 25 points and the fifth set to 15. A team must win every set by two points, so a set can run to 26–24, 30–28 or further. Each match is therefore made of short, fixed-length sets, with a small chance of extra points at the end of close sets.
- The fewest points a straight-sets match can produce is 75 (25–0 three times). In practice, a one-sided 3–0 usually totals somewhere between about 120 and 140 points.
- A five-set match adds a fourth set of at least 25 points and a fifth set of at least 15, which is why points totals depend so heavily on whether the match goes long.
Set markets
Match winner
Two outcomes, decided in sets. On 8XBET and elsewhere, strong favourites in club volleyball can be priced at 1.10 or shorter, which is too short to be worth backing on its own.
Set handicap
The favourite at −1.5 sets has to win 3–0 or 3–1. The underdog at +1.5 sets wins the bet if it loses 2–3 or wins the match. This is volleyball’s most popular handicap on 8XBET because it turns a lopsided match into a closer price.
Correct score and total sets
You can bet on the exact set score from six options, or on total sets with a line of 3.5 (over means four or five sets). If you think the match will be competitive but can’t choose a winner, an over 3.5 sets bet is a clean way to back it.
Points markets: worked example one
A league match finishes 3–1 to the home side: 25–21, 23–25, 25–19, 25–22.
- Home points: 25 + 23 + 25 + 25 = 98
- Away points: 21 + 25 + 19 + 22 = 87
- Total points: 98 + 87 = 185

Worked example two: when the markets disagree
In the 2025 FIVB Women’s World Championship final in Bangkok, Italy beat Turkey 3–2, with set scores of 23–25, 25–13, 24–26, 25–19, 15–8.
- Italy points: 23 + 25 + 24 + 25 + 15 = 112
- Turkey points: 25 + 13 + 26 + 19 + 8 = 91
- Total points: 203
Italy won the match, but an Italy −1.5 sets bet lost because a 3–2 win is only a one-set margin. Turkey +1.5 sets won. On a points handicap, Italy won by 21 points, so even a −10.5 line would have been comfortably covered. Total sets went over 3.5, and the 203 points would have beaten most pre-match totals lines. The example shows that set markets and points markets can settle in opposite directions for the same match. A dominant set like the 25–13 second set builds a large points margin without adding a set.
Competitions to know
Volleyball Nations League (VNL)
The FIVB’s annual national-team competition runs from early summer, roughly late May or June into July, for both men and women. The top nations play a heavy schedule over several weeks in different host cities. Team selection can rotate between weeks, so read the squad news before you bet.
Italy
Italy’s men’s SuperLega and women’s Serie A1 are among the strongest club leagues in the world. Italy also won both 2025 World Championships, the men beating Bulgaria in Manila and the women beating Turkey. The club season runs roughly from October to May.
Poland
The men’s PlusLiga attracts big crowds and has deep squads, and Polish clubs have regularly reached the later rounds of the CEV Champions League. Many matches are close, so set handicaps and over 3.5 sets bets need care.
Turkey
The women’s Sultanlar Ligi draws many leading international players to clubs such as VakıfBank, Fenerbahçe and Eczacıbaşı. The top clubs are much stronger than the rest, so expect short favourites and plenty of −1.5 sets lines. The men’s competition is the Efeler Ligi.
For Nigerian bettors, European winter evenings are convenient. Central European Time (UTC+1) is the same as WAT from late October to late March, so a 20:30 start in Italy or Poland is also 20:30 in Lagos. In summer, Europe moves an hour ahead.
Settlement points
- Retirements and forfeits: if a match is awarded by forfeit, many bookmakers void the bet instead of settling on the official 3–0 and 25–0 scores. Settlement rules differ between bookmakers.
- “Team to win a set” usually means winning at least one set in the match, not winning the first set. Read the market name carefully.
- Golden set: some cup ties use a deciding golden set after aggregate scores finish level. Match and set markets normally exclude it, and it may have markets of its own.

Does a golden set count towards volleyball match bets?
Normally not. A golden set is an extra deciding set used in some cup ties when the aggregate score is level, and match and set markets are usually settled without it. Bookmakers may open separate markets on the golden set itself, so read the market name before you bet.
Does “team to win a set” mean winning the first set?
