Basketball Betting on 8XBET: NBA, FIBA and How the Markets Settle

A practical guide to basketball markets on 8XBET, with worked naira examples, overtime rules and the differences between NBA and FIBA games.

Basketball betting mostly comes down to three questions: who wins, by how much, and how many points get scored. The sport is quick and high-scoring, and the result is never a draw once overtime is played, so each market settles on a single clear number. This guide covers how those markets work on 8XBET, how overtime affects each one, and why an NBA total and a EuroLeague total are not comparable.

The three core markets

Moneyline

The moneyline is a straight bet on the winner, overtime included. Say you put ₦5,000 on a team priced at 1.65. If that team wins, you get back ₦8,250, which is your ₦5,000 stake plus ₦3,250 profit. It is the simplest market, though heavy favourites in the NBA often trade at 1.20 or shorter, so you risk a lot to win a little.

Point spread

The spread gives the weaker side a head start, so it is the margin that matters, not just the winner. Take a game priced Denver −5.5 at 1.91 and Utah +5.5 at 1.91, which finishes Denver 112, Utah 108. Denver won by 4, which is less than 5.5, so the −5.5 ticket loses. Utah +5.5 wins, and ₦4,000 on it returns ₦7,640. The half point is there to stop a push. On a whole-number line such as −4, a four-point win would return your stake.

Totals (over/under)

A totals bet ignores the winner and looks only at combined points. In the game above, 112 + 108 = 220, so an under 224.5 ticket wins and an over loses. Our over/under betting guide explains how totals lines are set across different sports.

Quarters, halves and team totals

Basketball splits naturally into periods, and 8XBET lists most main markets for individual quarters and halves as well as the full game. A first-quarter total might sit around 56.5 in the NBA. First-half spreads and totals let you back a strong starting unit without depending on what the bench does late in the game.

Quarter betting is more volatile. Twelve minutes is short enough that a single hot shooting run can decide it, and teams that are well ahead often rest starters in the fourth quarter, which can wreck a fourth-quarter spread even when the full-game result goes as expected. Team totals are a cleaner way to bet on one side’s offence, because you only need that team’s score to reach the number.

How overtime affects settlement

Overtime decides more bets than people expect, and bookmakers handle it differently from market to market. Under the common approach:

  • Moneyline, full-game spread and full-game total include overtime. The final score after overtime is what counts.
  • Second-half markets usually include overtime as well.
  • Fourth-quarter markets usually do not. They settle on the 12 minutes of the fourth quarter only.
  • Player props count everything a player does, overtime included.
  • 3-way or “regulation time” markets exclude overtime by design. These are the only basketball markets where a draw can win.

Here is a worked example. A game is level at 104–104 after 48 minutes and finishes 115–110 after overtime. The regulation total was 208, but the settled full-game total is 225. An over 214.5 ticket therefore wins, even though the game was heading for the under until the last shot of regulation. A regulation-time 3-way bet on the draw also wins. A moneyline bet on the team that won in overtime is paid as normal. Before you rely on any of this, read the market name on your bet slip on 8XBET. “Including overtime” and “regulation” are different bets.

Player props

Player markets cover points, rebounds, assists, three-pointers made, and combinations such as points + rebounds + assists. Some bookmakers also offer double-double and triple-double markets. Take a guard whose points line is 26.5. He scores 24 in regulation, then adds 5 in overtime. His 29 points beat the line. Props usually require the player to take the court for the bet to stand. If he is ruled out before tip-off, the bet is normally voided. Injury reports matter far more here than in team markets. Our player props explainer goes through void rules and line shopping in more depth.

NBA vs FIBA: why the numbers differ

The two rulebooks produce very different games, so lines that look sensible in one competition can be badly off in the other.

RuleNBAFIBA (EuroLeague, AfroBasket, BAL, national teams)
Game length4 × 12 minutes = 484 × 10 minutes = 40
Overtime period5 minutes5 minutes
Fouls before a player is disqualified65
Three-point distance (top of the arc)7.24 m6.75 m

NBA games last eight minutes longer and are played at a faster pace, so NBA game totals regularly sit in the 220s. EuroLeague totals are more often in the 150s or 160s. Player lines follow the same pattern: 20 points is a big night in Europe, while in the NBA it is ordinary for a leading scorer. The five-foul limit in FIBA play also means a key player in foul trouble can sit for long stretches, which makes live betting on FIBA games especially sensitive to the foul count.

African competitions are played under FIBA rules too. Nigeria’s D’Tigress won a fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket title in August 2025 by beating Mali in the final (The Guardian Nigeria report). If you follow Nigerian sides at AfroBasket or the Basketball Africa League, use the 40-minute game as your baseline, not NBA numbers.

Watching from Nigeria: NBA tip-offs in WAT

The NBA regular season runs from late October to mid-April, and most of it is played while the US East Coast is on standard time (UTC−5). That makes WAT six hours ahead of Eastern time, so a 7:30 pm ET tip-off starts at 1:30 am in Lagos, and West Coast games starting at 10:30 pm ET begin at 4:30 am. For most Nigerian bettors this means placing pre-match bets before bed and checking the results in the morning. Use in-play betting only if you will actually be awake to follow the game. Weekend afternoon NBA games are the exception and land in the evening in Nigeria.

Accumulators and basketball

It is tempting to string four NBA favourites together, but spreads are priced close to even money, so every leg is close to a coin flip. Four legs at 1.91 multiply to about 13.31 (1.91 × 1.91 × 1.91 × 1.91 = 13.31), and a ₦2,000 ticket returns about ₦26,620 if every leg lands. Without any bookmaker margin, the chance of winning four even-money legs is only 1 in 16. The accumulator guide explains why combined margins make long basketball accumulators expensive.

FAQ

Does a basketball moneyline include overtime?

Yes. Full-game moneylines include overtime unless the market is labelled 3-way or regulation time.

Are WNBA and college games priced the same way as the NBA?

WNBA games are 40 minutes long, like FIBA games, so totals are lower. NCAA men’s college games use two 20-minute halves, which is why some half markets do not have quarter equivalents.
